Slugs and snails are among the most frustrating garden pests. They emerge after rain, devour tender seedlings overnight, and seem to multiply endlessly. The good news? You can reduce slug and snail damage without chemicals by combining several straightforward techniques. This approach not only protects your plants but also maintains the ecological balance your water-wise garden depends on.
Understanding Your Enemy
Before tackling solutions, it helps to know what you’re dealing with. Both slugs and snails are molluscs that thrive in moist conditions—which means water-wise gardeners who mulch heavily or water in the evening may inadvertently create ideal slug habitat. They’re most active during damp weather and tend to hide during dry spells, making them easier to manage during summer droughts.
The key difference? Snails carry shells (which offer some protection), whilst slugs are shell-less and more vulnerable to drying out. This distinction matters because it influences which control methods work best.

Remove Their Hiding Places
Slugs and snails love cool, damp refuges. Clearing away dead leaves, fallen wood, and dense plant debris removes their daytime shelter. Keep mulch 5–8 centimetres (2–3 inches) away from plant stems, and avoid piling it too thickly around vulnerable seedlings. Create Physical Barriers
Copper tape is remarkably effective. Slugs and snails dislike crossing it because it creates a mild electrical reaction with their mucus. Wrap it around pots, raised beds, or individual plants. A single strip 5 centimetres (2 inches) wide works well. It’s not foolproof—determined snails sometimes find their way around—but it significantly reduces damage.
Alternatively, coarse materials like crushed eggshells, diatomaceous earth, or gritty sand create an unpleasant surface. Reapply after rain, as moisture reduces their effectiveness.
Choose Resistant Plants
Some plants naturally deter slugs and snails. Herbs like Achillea mellifolium (Yarrow) , Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) , and Thymus vulgaris (Thyme) are rarely bothered. Ornamentals such as some Hylotelephium also tend to escape damage. Conversely, hostas, delphiniums, and young brassicas are slug magnets. Knowing this, you can position vulnerable plants strategically—perhaps closer to your house where you can monitor them—and use resistant varieties as sacrificial plants or barriers.
Active Removal Techniques
Hand-Picking
It sounds tedious, but it’s effective. Hunt for slugs and snails in the early morning or after rain, when they’re most active. Check under leaves, along stems, and in soil crevices. Drop them into soapy water or relocate them far from your garden (at least 20 metres [65 feet] away, or they’ll return). Wear gloves if you prefer—many gardeners find the texture unpleasant, though slugs are harmless to humans.
Beer Traps
Slugs and snails are attracted to fermenting yeast. Bury shallow containers (yoghurt pots work well) so the rim is level with the soil surface. Fill them with cheap beer or a mixture of water, sugar, and yeast. They’ll crawl in and drown. Check traps daily and refill as needed. This method works best during active slug season and requires regular maintenance, but it’s satisfying and chemical-free.
Encourage Natural Predators
Ground beetles, slow worms (legless lizards), hedgehogs, and certain birds eat slugs and snails. Create conditions they enjoy: leave some areas unmulched and slightly wild, provide shallow water sources, and avoid pesticides (which kill their food sources). A small log pile or loose stone arrangement offers shelter for beetles. If hedgehogs visit your area, leave a small gap in your garden fence to allow access.
Timing and Seasonal Strategy
Slug and snail damage peaks during wet springs and autumns. Adjust your approach seasonally. In dry summers, they’re less active, so focus on prevention rather than removal. In wet periods, intensify your efforts—more frequent hand-picking, refresh beer traps weekly, and check barriers regularly.
For seedlings and transplants, the first few weeks are critical. Consider protecting young plants with cloches or individual barriers until they’re established and less palatable.
The Water-Wise Angle
Here’s the nuance: water-wise gardening and slug management can seem at odds. Mulching conserves moisture but harbours slugs. Evening watering keeps plants hydrated but creates damp conditions slugs love. The solution isn’t to abandon these practices—they’re too valuable—but to be intentional.
